Animated Eagle Book Series. The Eagle Books are a series of four books that are brought to life by wise animal characters, Mr. Eagle and Miss Rabbit, and a clever trickster, Coyote, who engage Rain That Dances and his young friends in the joy of physical activity, eating healthy foods, and learning from their elders about traditional ways of being healthy. Animated versions of the four books bring the characters to life. Narrated by author Georgia Perez and voiced by children and adults from the Standing Rock Sioux tribal nation, the animated versions provide an interactive tool to engage children in activities and discussions about healthy eating, and the joy of being active while looking to traditional ways to stay healthy and prevent type 2 diabetes.salinasyouthserviceshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05095121149661183774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1317633686466155.post-17142759528111812112011-04-15T16:01:00.000-07:002011-04-15T16:02:50.173-07:00Soccer @ the Cesar Chavez Library!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFYPxLGkrUXhQsF8ZWIO3lzqvWbCqlJw0erVGfhP8JkpNoz7q0hsYgDF5SabRUlQcmzKwu93cYFTTiuc2bdQbMZ-NtYvlrwZtAHE0vti62TuS8apjm2gEjLj3VQVcU1S-dbx0z1GrkHqE/s400/futbol.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5595949440529470642" />Join Rodrigo and David outside the library for an afternoon of soccer. Please read more for additional information.

Thanks to support from Parks and Recreation the Library and Community Services Department is happy to announce regular afternoons of free soccer clinics for children in Salinas at the Cesar Chavez Library. Salinas Futbol Central has supplied balls for participants to use, and the clinics will be run from community players and athletes from California State University Monterey Bay. The classes are for children 8-14 who want to learn the basics of ball handling, structure of the game, and have an opportunity for scrimmage and game play. No experience is required, but its highly suggested those interested come with soccer cleats, shin guards, and shorts if they are able to, and if not, something comfortable to play in. The classes are free of charge.

For more information, or for any questions regarding the program please call Carissa Purnell at 758-7419 or via email at carissap@ci.salinas.ca.us This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You can see him here www.justin.tv-snappy, or find out more information online http://salinaspubliclibrary.org/children/snappy. The Californian and Monterey County Herald have stopped by to write stories, here is a piece from the Califorian's staff writer, "Although he wasn't giving interviews Monday, Snappy Shelly Steinbeck, the Salinas Public Library's beloved African leopard tortoise had that smug, self-assured look of a movie star who just signed a three-pic deal.

Known to both his massive fan club and to his personal entourage alike simply as "Snappy," the library's celebrity pet was intently focused on devouring a salad of fresh radicchio and cherry tomatoes when the library's publicity machine went full-throttle trumpeting his latest achievement. It seems that Snappy recorded his 1 millionth page view on his 24-hour webcam, making him the most-viewed tortoise on the Internet.

Snappy's "agent" and library spokeswoman Jan Neal said the milestone came some time on New Year's Eve as the affable tortoise was preparing to usher in 2011.

"Snappy's New Year's resolution is to keep the web hits coming!" Neal said. "He's looking forward to reaching his personal goal of 2 million." Always wanting to give back, Snappy makes himself available to his younger fans Tuesdays at 4 p.m. when he personally hosts "Snappy the Tortoise Time." The library is located at 350 Lincoln Ave. in Salinas."salinasyouthserviceshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05095121149661183774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1317633686466155.post-31222683124834378952011-01-07T15:26:00.000-08:002011-01-07T15:31:20.888-08:00Literacy Center Open House<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 284px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5mtf7Bl1CG0i81MQC-u1Fh2XarsXQarNGKFPmEl_4qeBIQ4snpCJz1U69v1Vha-jTqU5tcpciVx-EwZWsBxgZQUeuG70I9BFyvQ1-TOjrjMhYTSOaY0ez9NgRJKflo5i5RdGijqz53p0/s200/margarita.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5559590481304072658" />

Friday, January 7th, 2011
11:00 - 12:00 pm, Cesar Chavez Library
4:00 - 5:00 pm, John Steinbeck Library

Salinas Public Library’s Literacy Center will host two Open Houses on Friday, January 7th to recruit new students for its Family for Literacy (FFL) Program, and a new upcoming series of classes to support family literacy.

Any Salinas family with a child under five years of age is invited to attend either Open House. Joseph Bruchac, a prolific and award-winning author of Native American descent (The First Strawberries, A Boy Called Slow) describes life in 1620 for a man who was destined to save the Pilgrims even as he was losing his family and tribe. Told from Squanto's point of view, this historically accurate and detailed story brings to life one of the most important moments in America's past. Demonstrating how much his people (the Patuxet, the People of the Falls) value honor, Squanto befriends English traders, even after being kidnapped and taken to Spain. After much hard work, Squanto manages to sail back to his homeland, where, in spite of his discovery that many of his people have died from disease brought by white people, he acts as envoy between the English and his own people, and helps the pilgrims survive in their new world.

Throughout this moving tale, Squanto's belief that "these men can share our land as friends" poignantly shines through. Greg Shed's gouache illustrations capture the warmth and dignity of Squanto and his friends. Young readers will be fascinated by this lesser-known perspective on the Thanksgiving tradition that remains strong today. From things as large as the sun and as small as a pillow, the story highlights how much we should truly be grateful for in our lives. Family and friends coupled with the waves of the ocean and an Abuelita's wrinkles will remind children that everything around them truly is a gift. The colorful illustrations will engage young readers, and the bilingual text will build literacy skills for young readers regardless of their native language. A very good read for families and children 3 and up.salinasyouthserviceshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05095121149661183774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1317633686466155.post-3956353075636787692010-01-19T12:32:00.000-08:002010-01-19T12:36:02.413-08:00The Goblin and the Empty ChairMem Fox along with Leo and Diane Dillon bring to life the story of a lonely Goblin who is ashamed and afraid of his own reflection. Living close to a family’s farm, he comes out at night to finish the chores the small family can’t finished on their own. He helps plow the fields and water plants, and cuts wood to help the family build and paint fences. Although he sneaks out quietly at night thinking he will fool the family, each member watches him in silence and is grateful for all his work. One day the Mom decides to invite the Goblin in with food and welcome him to the family to say thank you for all his hard work, but the Goblin is afraid to show his face. Will he come to dinner?

The colorful illustrations and medieval setting will keep kids from 2-8 engaged and the story is perfect for beginning readers to get practice with simple new and old vocabulary...salinasyouthserviceshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05095121149661183774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1317633686466155.post-27860101610412093712010-01-14T13:49:00.000-08:002010-01-14T13:59:48.058-08:00Sharks!
The library has added some great new titles for anyone interested in learning about all things Sharks. Laying in bed Elena dreams of all the places Tatty Ratty could be, riding a train back home, eating with the three bears, maybe even riding on a magic carriage with Cinderella. In the bath Elena imagines Ratty Tatty aboard a pirate ship sailing the ocean, or maybe shooting off into space in a rocket ship. But in the end does he ever return?
